Hardcover, US, 418 pages
Published September 27th 2011
Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

“Have you ever asked yourself, do monsters make war, or does war make monsters?”

Goodreads Synopsis

“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.”
Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hairactually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

My Review

“Wishes are false. Hope is true. Hope makes its own magic.”

This one had a really interesting synopsis. Otherworldly war? Devil's supply of human teeth?!! Star-crossed love? Violent pasts?

Needless to say, I was hooked.

The book started out on a mysterious note, with our protagonist Karou- an art student in Prague- being harassed by her stalkerish ex boyfriend who lands up as a model in her art class to torment her. But Karou repays him in kind with a bit of 'wishful thinking'.

For real. As in the kind where she wished him a nasty case of itches and it came true.

This is where her bizarre character development starts and keeps getting more mystifying- ranging from the blue hair that grows straight out of her head to her frequent visits to one terrifying teeth collector who lives with a snake woman in some other dimension which can only be reached through a portal.

It's a while before the world building starts to make sense and I was able to discern that the story revolved around Chimaera and Angels- arch nemesis by birth and caught in a brutal and bloody war for centuries. Though this explained the basis of the forbidden love and the war, other aspects of the story like the teeth collector and Karou's relationship and past(?) with Akiva, the gorgeous angel remained a conundrum for quite some time.

The world building was electrifying. Neither overdone and perplexing, nor wishy-washy and nondescript. Karou and Akiva were both perfectly balanced characters and fit together nicely. The plot was intriguing and writing was fantastic with an almost lyrical twinge to it.

“Love is a luxury.
No. Love is an element.
An element. Like air to breathe, earth to stand on.”

The only thing that struck me as odd was the casual way in which the two worlds- the supernatural and the normal one- were mixed together. For instance the blasé acceptance of the townsfolk of flying creatures resembling human beings and the apathetic attitude of Karou's friend towards her powers and upbringing were a bit unsettling.

Apart from this minor snag the book was quite a riveting read with a painful ending that had me craving for the sequel immediately.

Review: The Fiery Heart- Richelle Mead

438 pages
Published November 19th 2013 by Razorbill

Synopsis

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives.

In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .

But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure — and re-education — looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race throughout this smoldering fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.

My Review

“Don’t take the high ground and assume you already know what you’ll do. The truth is, when it comes to someone you love, you’ll find there isn’t anything you won’t do.”

Oh. My. God.

It’s obvious now that Ms. Mead wasn’t kidding when she said The Fiery Heart is to Bloodlines what Shadow Kiss was to the VA series. This is the book where the story actually picks up pace, you see the beginning of another magically intricate plot and there is some real character development to boot.

“It’s Adrian Ivashkov logic. Don’t try to understand it. Just roll with it.”

TFH was actually Adrian’s journey, one that was full of self-realization. He is no longer the party boy we knew in VA. His snarky and smartass side is never far away, but they are no longer his defining characteristics. Rather, we get to see more of his loyalty and passion, the depth of his love for Sydney, and his readiness to do anything for her. Adrian’s POV was addictive. It made me so damn frustrated when the POV switched to Sydney’s. It was hilarious to see his perspective on certain things and at the same time disturbing to see how much spirit affected him. The things he does and tries to do for Sydney were…well…. nothing short of fantabulous.

“Relax, having kids is years away. But can you imagine? Your brains, my charm, our collective good looks... then add in the usual physical abilities dhampirs get. It's really not even fair to everyone else.”

“An image of Sydney's face appeared in my mind's eye, calm and lovely.
I believe in you.
My anxiety faded.
I took a deep breath and met the gazes of all those watching me in the room.
Who was I to do this?
I was Adrian Ivashkov.
And I was about to kick some ass.”

“Moroi shied from the sunlight but as I watched Sydney, I knew without a doubt that humans had been made for the sun.”

Sydney also comes a long way from hating vampires to loving one to death. Her concern for Adrian and her truces to keep him from using too much spirit and to control his rampant drinking were cute.

“No matter how long or how difficult, we will undo whatever that Moroi boy has done to you."
I managed a wavering smile, tasting blood in my mouth. "You sure about that, Dad? Because he's done everything to me.”

It was amazing how the two fit together like two missing puzzle pieces even after being so very different from one another. They complement each other perfectly and though I wouldn’t go as far as to say they have the Rose-Dimirti kind of magic, there is some really strong chemistry to spice things up.

“I'm guessing whatever 'ways' you have in mind aren't Jill-appropriate either."
"Put your books away and I'll show you.”

The various Eddy-Jill and Trey-Angeline moments seemed kinda forced though. As did Neil’s infatuation with a certain dhampir. It had none of the flair that Christian and Lissa had as supporting characters and seemed mostly stilted .

The ending was…. painful. A cliffhanger of sorts…again. After TFH’s comparison to shadow kiss, it was predictable but nothing had me prepared for Adrian’s reaction. The intensity and rawness of the emotion…it may have made me shed a few tears.

Overall…yet another stupendous book by Richelle Mead and yet another agonising cliffhanger to wait out until July 2014 until Silver Shadows comes out…

Highly recommended- 4/5 stars!

Review: Origin (LUX #4)- Jennifer L Armentrout

Eeeeeee!!!! I'm back!! After a break that seemed aeons long!! And I have a review....for one of the most anticipated YA books of 2013! Yeah...the one with hot aliens and oodles of extraterrestrial conspiracy coupled with a badass female protagonist and nail chewing suspense.

Goodreads Synopsis

Daemon will do anything to get Katy back.

After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. Taking out anyone who stands in his way? Done. Burning down the whole world to save her? Gladly. Exposing his alien race to the world? With pleasure.

All Katy can do is survive.

Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?

Together, they can face anything.

But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on?

And will they even be together?

My Review

“A certain bone-deep understanding occurred and my hand tightened around the smaller one I held. It weren't stars we were staring at. The sky was falling.”

It took me several tries to get this review right, primarily because I had no idea how to do it without too much fangirling and partly because it seemed impossible to review it without  giving out major spoilers. But I guess fourth time's the charm...

After Opal's cliffhanger of epic proportions the wait for Origin was a torturous one to say the least and after hearing about the introduction of dual POVs in this one....well, I might have attempted a celebratory cartwheel!

The book starts off with Katy's POV, with her describing the 'hospitality' dished out by Daedalus' creepy crew and it gave an insight into the organisation's inner workings. As the book switches POVs we get to see Daemon's anguish at losing Katy and his family's attempts to sabotage all his insane plans to rescue her. But Daemon being Daemon ends up doing what he wants after all and after several pages of painful separation the two are reunited in the most unlikeliest places. Blake and Luc make a reappearance and a jaw dropping secret is revealed.

Daedalus' master plan had me gaping at my computer screen for several seconds like a stupefied idiot. But boy....does Armentrout have a flair for introducing unexpected twists! The whole idea was ingeniously handled and resulted in the thickening of the plot 50 times over.

The book was also full of cute Daemon/Katy moments and it was fun to see their relationship mature. The ending was pure awesomeness, though it was difficult to say goodbye to some characters I had come to love over the course of the series. The end was a cliffhanger of sorts...again! I could barely restrain myself from going berserk with frustration!

Origin was probably the most important book in the series in terms of plot( which gained some serious momentum and became amazingly fast paced) and character development. Though Daemon is still a cocky smartass and Katy's stubbornness still puts a dumb mule's to shame, we also get to see different sides of their personalities- Daemon's softer and more romantic side...

“So I was thinking, there're eighty-six thousand, four hundred seconds in a day, right? There're one thousand, four hundred and forty minutes in a day...There're one hundred and sixty-eight hours in a week. Around eighty-seven hundred and then some hours in a year, and you know what?...I want to spend every second, every minute, every hour with you...I want a year's worth of seconds and minutes with you. I want a decade's worth of hours, so many that I can't add them up.”

....And Katy's more reasonable one.

Overall, a highly recommended heart palpitatingly awesome read!

Review:

Move over vamps, werewolves and all other oh-so-humdrum supernatural creatures....the GARGOYLES are here! Coloured skin, piranha like teeth, bulky bodies and ferociousness personified- these creatures are descended from the mighty dragons and have a preference for blood, raw meat, gory battles and deadly 'mating games'. Livia's world building was amazingly good. For one, the bad guys actually sported red skin and forked tongues- quite an invigorating change from the usual six packs and droolworthy eyes.  The entire setting of the Otherworld Piatra and it's residents- the gargoyles- along with their....ahem...unusual lifestyle was extremely captivating.

Klara's hopes of having a peaceful birthday are dashed when her favourite fictional character(who incidentally happens to be a gargoyle) appears in her bedroom, demanding to know why SHE summoned him. After narrowly avoiding suffering a coronary due to his (to mildly put it) unexpected appearance, she realises that the stereotypical bad boys only seem perfection personified from afar. While Kann's gorgeous physique( barring the sharp teeth and greyish skin) present a not-entirely-unwelcome distraction, his ruthless nature, dangerous temper and pseudo rapist tendencies are distinctly unattractive. But Kann- irrevocably drawn to Klara- is determined to have her. Through a whirlwind of steamy courtship, both end up in the perilous world of Piatra where a deranged sister, a bloodthirsty ex and a stealthily tyrannical Haus elder threaten to break the happy couple apart. Caught between two worlds and an unforeseen road to self discovery, Klara is torn between what she wants and needs while Kann would stop at nothing to keep her at his side.

Livia's Olteano's sizzling debut is a page turner. While the plot could have been better, the world building and Kann and Klara's scorching chemistry kept me hooked on. Klara's POV was engaging and (thankfully!) not centred around just the general hotness of Kann. The unprecedentedly wild lifestyle of the gargoyles was interesting, especially the idea of mating games and their community events. The ending was a bit of a let down. I'd been expecting a twist or at-least more info about Klara's  impulsive deal with the dragon.

But definitely looking forward to see which turn the story takes in the sequel...

Rating- 3/5 stars!

Excerpt:

The thing leaned forward a bit more, its head poking out into the cascading beams of moonlight. Those eyes seemed to shine even brighter as light hit its...his...face. I wanted to scream but I was so beyond panicked my voice didn’t work anymore. The plan was to get my cell phone and call 911, but before I could even end the thought, he did a blurry motion and suddenly my phone wasn’t there anymore. Eyebrows raced toward the top of my head and I opened eyes so wide they stung.

“So, what do you want, witch?”

I almost screamed. His voice had the jarring quality of a whisper though I heard it too well for it to have been simply whispered. My skin burst in prickly points and my legs clattered. He sounded off and in a very bad mood.

“Well? What do you want?” he snarled.

Want? To place a call to 911 is what I wanted. Hell, a SWAT team, the thing...creature looked dangerous!

He drew in a gulp of air, releasing it with a whoosh. “I don’t have a lot of patience, I warn you.”

He seated his tall—very tall—and ferocious-looking body on the edge of the bed with uncanny grace. I tried to scoot away, frantically looking for my phone again. He placed one hand on the other side of me effectively restricting any escape route. Okay. Okay. It had to be a dream. A dream, simple as that. I took deep, hopefully calming breaths, but my heart twitched like it was possessed.

He wrinkled his nose. “You smell.”

“Excuse me?” I screeched.

“You stink, in fact. Like...bodies, writhing bodies, sweaty, horny. And plenty of them.” He snorted, and it was perhaps the complete stillness he exuded that put something of a damper on my panic. I was seething instead.

“What. The. Hell. Are you doing in my room? Who are you?”

He cocked his head to the side. His eyes caught light and shined that ominous silver again. A shudder emerged from someplace deep inside me, a primal place. I wanted to bolt so bad my feet itched.

“You’ve summoned me and I suggest you be quick about your request. Your smell is appalling. Enjoy an orgy tonight?”

“WHAT? Listen, you maniac, I don’t know where you get off...”

Before I could blink, I was lifted from the bed, my back pressed against the wall. Mean hands fitted snuggly around my arms. Those silver eyes scared the living days out of me from barely a breath away. He certainly put the F in feral.

“You won’t speak like that to me again. Or those will be your last words, are we clear?”
